Organizers of the Festival for independent cinema in Oldenburg say "it is a mixture of provincial charm and aristocratic glamour". The atmosphere of the old town is liable for the charm, while stylish secret parties, opening the event, reply for the glamour. They usually take place in unexpected places, for example, in a bank vault. The Festival, which was opened in 1994, lasts 4 days in September and involves awarding prizes in five nominations (the best German film, short film, the festival film, actor and debutant director). Screening of films, ranging from cute comedies to scary films, is arranged not only in theaters but also in the city jail, where guests of the Festival watch a movie together with prisoners.
