Ettal cheese factory is located next to the Ettal Abbey. Three thousand liters of milk are brought here every day from 36 surrounding farms and transformed into cheese, butter and yogurt. This is the first production in Bavaria to receive the sign of a "Certified Quality of Bavarian Ammergau Alps". In 2006 the cheese factory was also awarded the "Selected Brand" in the competition "Germany – a Land of Ideas".
Ettal cheese factory is famous for the regional cheese, in particular, a hard cheese Ettaler Manndl named after the mountain Ettal, a beer cheese with onion (Ammergauer Bierkäse), a «fiery cheese» (Ammergauer Feuerkäse) with garlic and chili, a caraway seed cheese (Ettaler Kümmelkäse), a semi-hard monastery cheese (Ettaler Klosterkäse), a spicy cheese with wild garlic (Ammergauer Bärlauchkäse). Through the window in the cheese factory you can watch how cheese is made and how it is matured. Moreover, guests in the factory’s showroom can enjoy coffee and cheesecake.
