One of the most famous German writers of the XXcentury, Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22 1898 in Osnabrück. Remarque'snovels "All Quiet on the Western Front," "Three Comrades","Arc de Triomphe", "A Time to Live and A Time to Die,""The Black Obelisk" have been translated into dozens of languages ofthe world and formed the basis for many films and performances.
The writer lefthis hometown at the age of 18, when he was drafted into the army during theFirst World War. After the war, he came back and worked here as a teacher forsome time. Erich Maria Remarque PeaceCenter and the Archive of the writer were opened in 1996 by joint efforts ofthe city administration and the University of Osnabrück. The center’s permanentexhibition is dedicated to the life and work of the writer.
