St. Mary's Church, or a Concert Church, as it is called inNeubrandenburg, was built in 1270. This is the first and the main parish churchof the city: its history, its ups and downs are associated with it. The churchwas completely destroyed several times. After a number of reconstructions, itsGothic style was complemented by the elements of classicism and German Baroque.
In the midst of the ХХ century, the elegant gables, arches and side wallswere turned into ruins by World War II. The church was rebuilt with the help ofthe survived images and drawings. St. Mary's Church in Neubrandenburg wasrepaired by pooling resources: 20 mln out of 31 million Euros, spent for the restoration, were gathered by rank and file citizens! A modern concert hall with 850 seats wasalso built besides the temple: hence the name – a Concert Church. The hallbelongs to Neubrandenburg Philharmonic. Both classical Lutheran divine servicesand significant cultural events, such as the Youth Music Festival (JugendMusiziert) or Festspiele, are held here. There is also an art gallery and asmall museum in the church which tells about its checkered past.
