The City Palace, the same City Hall, is an elegant building in thecenter of Fulda, surrounded by a beautiful park with walkways and fountains. Formerlyit was the residence of the German Elector Friedrich Wilhelm, and even before therelived the bishops who ruled Fulda up to the XIX century. In the Middle Ages therestood a defensive Abtsburg fortress-castle in place of the palace. It was apowerful structure, designed to protect the city. So, when Fulda grew a bitrich and the ruinous medieval wars went on the back burner, an elegant Renaissancecastle has been built instead of the fortress.
Like many buildings in Fulda, the City Palace is avisual aid on the history of German architecture. Here you can find any styleelements: the majestic Romanesque symmetry and Gothic details, luxuriant baroqueembellishments and discreet luxury of classicism. The palace is surrounded by acitrus garden: orange and mandarin trees blossom in spring, and become coveredwith appetizing fruits in summer. The palace houses a small museum with antiquefurniture, decorative items, paintings, sculptures and other decorations.
