Like in many other European cities, citizens often call the main cathedral of Essen simply Dom. Erected at the beginning of the XII century, it was named in honor of the saints Cosmas and Damian. Part of it was destroyed during the Second World War. However, after the war it was restored first in the city. Despite the fact that most residents of Essen are Lutheran, this church is Catholic because the city is the capital of the Catholic Diocese of the Ruhr.
The church building houses a museum including the treasures collection of the German emperors. There are works of art here having nearly a thousand years of history. One cannot miss the statue of the Golden Madonna - a genuine masterpiece of the Middle Ages.
