Church of Our Lady in Oberwesel - National Monument
The construction of the gothic Church of Our Lady,which is also called the Red church due to the color of the walls, started in1308. It is included in the federal list of monuments of national culturalvalues. The golden altar is the main attraction of the temple. This is one ofthe first Gothic altars in Germany. Apart from it, the altars of St. Nicholasand St. Martha of the XVI century have also been preserved. It is believed thatthe statue of the Madonna of the XIV century patronizes ship captains. The Baroqueorgan by master Eberhardt was installed at the end of the XVIII century.
In 1975, thievesbroke into the church taking with them 60 statuettes, including 57 figures ofthe golden altar. It took the police more than a decade to find the missingstatuettes. All of them were returned to the church.
