In 1997, the world's largest Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, the Germans call it ZKM) appeared in a city where the University of Technology known all over Germany was located. Its goal is to demonstrate how new technologies can be involved in creating works of art.
The Centre is closely linked to the National Academy of Design: the two institutions, in fact, cover related fields. Visitors of the ZKM can explore several individual exhibitions in the center: the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Media Theatre, the Institute of Music and Acoustics, the exhibition of media art, the laboratory of outmode media systems and much more. A souvenir shop and a restaurant, located in the lobby of the institution, are open to visitors who have finished viewing the exhibition.
