One of the oldest of its buildings, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Dom St. Peter und Paul), is on the Cathedral Island, in the oldest part of the town. It is called "the cradle of Brandenburg." The cathedral was built where the first bishopric was founded east of the Elbe in the middle of the X century. Initially, in 1165, it was built as a Romanesque basilica on piers, but was unfinished and then completed in the XV century as a gothic one.
With an ascetic image on the outside, the interior of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is impressive with the marble tombstones in the crypt, the cross of 1250, the medieval benches, the Cathedral Museum with vestments of priests and religious paraphernalia, books and sculptures. The Church of St. Peter (XII century) standing on the site of the chapel of the former town castle, is also on the Cathedral Island. The Cathedral community uses this temple as the winter church.
