Just a few kilometers from Weimar is a place called Buchenwald (Beech Forest). During the years of World War II, one of Germany’s largest concentration camps was located here. Since 1958, Buchenwald memorial complex has been located on the site of the camp. People come here to honor the memory of the victims. The railways, on which cars with the prisoners ran and the Devil's Road from the station to the camp were preserved...
In Buchenwald only part of the buildings survived, including the crematorium, watchtowers and the construction area. Buchenwald’s gate with the inscription in German «Jedem das Seine» (To each his own) and a fence with barbed wire have also remained untouched. From the barracks where the prisoners were kept, the foundation with a memorial tablet remained. Nearby is a monument to prisoners of Buchenwald, near the Alarm Bell Tower.
