Broich Castle (884) on the banks of the Ruhr is the oldest fortification of Carolingian to the north of the Alps. Being built to protect the ford on the main road in the region, the castle soon ceased to be an important point at the place and in the XI century became the property of the Broich family. They made it a real fortress with a 17-meter donjon and Gothic body.
Since 1938, the castle has been government-owned. There is a city museum with archaeological finds, a wedding hall, the Coat of Arms, Fireplace, Knights’ Halls used for private events here. In summer, the castle becomes a concert venue, hosting the folk music festival called Castle Rock Festival.
