Between the two most popular Frankfurt parks, the Palmengarten and the Grüneburgpark, there is the Goethe University’s Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten). Its history began in 1763 when a local physician Johann Christian Senckenberg started growing medical plants not far from the Eschenheim Tower (Eschenheimer Turm) to provide physicians and pharmacists with ingredients for the creation of medicine.
In 1907, for lack of space and air pollution in the center of the city it was decided to move the garden to a more remote area near the Palmengarten. The garden was moved once again in the early 1930s of the XX century.
In contrary to the earlier gardens, where plants were arranged according to the classification of Carl Linnaeus, the current botanical garden is divided into thematic and geographical zones. Samples of the Central European flora make up the main part of the collection of 5 thousand plant species. However, plants of other climate zones - Mediterranean, Asian and North American can also be found here.
The main focus of the garden is on science and research. However, it doesn’t keep the Frankfurt people and the city visitors from enjoying the beautiful garden, which is open to the public from March to October.
