A 30-meter high Bismarck Tower of gray sandstonestands in Remscheid City Park (Stadtpark). It was planned to build it in 1896 inthe lifetime of the "Iron Chancellor" Otto von Bismarck, who receivedthe freedom of Remscheid a year before. As a result of the competition, the projectof architects Friedrich Putzer and Hermann Jansen was selected out of 195 works.They offered to build the tower in the Romanesque style.
The major part ofthe Bismarck Tower construction expenses was covered by donations of the city people.The construction was completed in 1901. After the war, the affected pyramidaltop was replaced by a dome, and in 1968 the tower was handed over to the observatorynamed after Dr. Hans Shepherd (Dr. Hans-Shepherd Observatory RemscheidVolkshochschule Remscheid). The observatory can be visited on Wednesdays andSundays, climbing 128 steps.
