The first houses of the small settlement near the Leine River have appeared on the site of the present embankment. Later the ramparts and Beginenturm Tower were built there: the latter survives to this day.
The not so long quay attracts tourists with three avant-garde figures of Niki de Saint Phalle - a sculptor who loved to shock the audience. When in 1974 the fatties (the author called them "Nana") were placed on the quay, Hanoverians protested demanding not to spoil the historic center.
Another attraction of the quay is the flea market, where they sell everything- from art to rags. Hannover’s flea market is known even outside Germany. It is open every day from 8:00am till 3:00pm.
