Holy Trinity Stefan Makhrishchsky Monastery — Alexandrov Shrine

The Holy Trinity Stefan Makhrishchsky Monastery became a convent only after its revival in 1995. It was founded as a friary in the XIV century by the Monk Stefan of Makhrishch, the former monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. He chose this place in the woods to seclude himself, but gradually people began to come to him in search of solace and spiritual advice. The Monk Stefan became the hegumen of the new monastery, which was used to be visited by Sergius of Radonezh. It is known that the monastery served as a place of correction for delinquent monks.

The Holy Trinity Stefan Makhrishchsky Monastery survived a large-scale fire and devastation in the late 16th century, but was restored. Here, the Trinity Cathedral was rebuilt, as well as the Church of St. Stefan of Makhrishch, the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and the Gate Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh appeared. Half of these temples, the Trinity and St. Stefan churches were destroyed in Soviet times. In the 1990s, nuns settled in the dilapidated building near the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and the monastery was reborn as a convent. The Church of St. Stefan of Makhrishch was restored in the old form. The monastery keeps the relics of its founder and the relics of St. Barlaam, the Wonderworker of Makhrishch.
