Nördlingen Ries, or simply Ries valley, is a kettle of around 24 km in diameter left after a meteorite impact 15 million years ago. It is in the very centre of the kettle that Nördlingen was built. Border between two German mountain ranges – Swabian and Franconian Alb – lies in Nördlingen Ries. Here you can also see traces of the crater: its edges are still clearly visible among meadows and fields under crop.
You will have an incredible sensation! This meteorite kettle is considered one of the biggest on Earth. Territory of Nördlingen Ries is protected. You will find rare plats here, birds build nests in spring, and a Geopark under UNESCO control was founded.
