Rheintor Gate is one of the oldest attractions in Andernach,which served as the main entrance to Andernach from the Rhine. For its time itwas quite a progressive structure. An interim courtyard lies between the outerand inner walls, from where they could climb up and attack enemies pouringboiling oil and resin.
On one of theinner wall there are two bas-reliefs of human figures in full growth. Accordingto a popular theory they are the baker’s students who saved Andernach, droppinghives with bees on enemies. According to another legend, the statue symbolizesthe Brewers, who poured boiling water on the Swedish army in 1633.
