Rhine Gate Tower was built in 1200. Its height is 35 meters and it is one of the few surviving parts of the old city fortifications. Being built to protect the bridge over the Rhine, it was a witness to major historical events: in 1548 Spanish troops successfully attacked the tower trying to take Konstanz. Subsequently, the bridge was destroyed, and the crossing of the Rhine was constructed 100 meters above the river, and the tower lost its value. Now it decorates the city district and looks a bit lonely on the background of dwelling houses. However, the tower is a beautiful observation deck with views of the Rhine and Lake Constance.
