The mainsquare in Lubeck is just called Markt, that is, market. For centuries it hasbeen the market square of one of the largest commercial cities in Europe. Thereis a beautiful City Hall with Gothic turrets and a grand Renaissance portal onit. Beautifully decorated meeting rooms with huge chandeliers and groupportraits of the city’s respectable people please the eye inside the building. Thefate of Lubeck and of all the Hanseatic League was decided within these halls inthe Middle Ages.
Niederegger marzipan cafe and shop is on the Markt.It has constantly worked since 1806. The 125m-high Gothic spiers ofMarienkirche are near it. For several centuries they have been regarded as thehighest in Europe. Famous writers Thomas and Heinrich Mann were baptized inthis church in childhood.
The most important public events in Lubeck,including the Christmas market and festival “Christmas City of the North”, IceMagic winter holiday at the rink and the summer Duckstein Festival are held onthe Markt. You can hear singers and watch various theater performances here, atany time. So, you can spend a few hours or even all day on the main square ofLubek. There is always what to do there.
