LubeckCathedral is located on the southern side of the old town, on Buka Island.According to legend, Duke Henry of Saxony, nicknamed Leo, who was banished fromthis Polabian land, once hunted at these places. A deer with diamond decorationon the horns appeared to the Duke at the place where now the cathedral stands. Theduke killed the deer and took the jewelry, thanks to which he was able to startthe temple construction.
Lubeck Cathedral was built in the XII century in theGothic style and since then has undergone many restorations, but its appearanceas a whole has not changed. There are many works of famous artists, pioneers ofthe Northern Renaissance in the cathedral, and the Gothic art is seriously representedin it. The 17m-high triumphal cross by Bernt Notke (1477) is the gem of thecollection. The altar, painted by Hans Memling for Lubeck Cathedral, is now in St.Anne’s Museum. The interior is decorated by baroque sculptures of the Flemishmaster Thomas Quellinus.
