In 2007 Munich collector Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser handed over to Chemnitz his collection of German art of the 20th century – almost 2500 works by 270 artists. The former bank building constructed in the 1930s was provided for the museum that now bares the name of its sponsor. Three main gems of the collection are avant-garde artist Otto Dix; Russian artist, student of Repin, who moved to Germany in 1986 Alexej von Jawlensky; as well as expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff who was born near Chemnitz and was one of the founders of the art group “Bridge”. Their art is presented with dozens of paintings in the museum.
