Freising Cathedral is located at the Cathedral Hill (Freisinger Domberg) of Freising. It adjoins the residence of bishops, as a reminder of bygone power of Freising’s episcopate. Even today, this temple is considered very important, because it functions as the main church, along with Frauenkirche in Munich. The cathedral is decorated with two bell towers that are visible even from the Munich airport. They are effectively illuminated at night.
The Freising Cathedral was built on the site of an ancient church at the beginning of the XIII century. In the 1600s it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. A century later the famous Bavarian architects, the Asam brothers, added lush interiors in the rococo style. The ceiling with frescoes is especially beautiful. It is for this cathedral that the great painter Rubens created his “Our Lady of Revelation", which is associated with the apocalyptic parts of the Bible. Today, this work is in the Munich Pinakothek.
