A bronze sculpture was erected in1984 in Ulm, opposite the Arsenal (Zeughaus) in memory of Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in1879. Even though his parents took thefuture great physicist to Munich only a year and a half after his birth, thenatives of Ulm are very proud of their compatriot.
JürgenHertz is the author of Einstein’s Memorial, which consists of three parts. Thelower part resembles a rocket and symbolizes technology, the conquest of theuniverse and nuclear power. Two powerful jets of water come out of the rocket base.It seems as if we are witnessing the start of a person into space. Some callthe monument a fountain because of the water.
On the rocket there is a huge snail - the symbol of nature and wisdom. Italso symbolizes skepticism about mankind’s dominance of technology. It seemslike Einstein's head comes out of the snail shell. The physics’ image is recognizable. He is known to us from the popular photograph in this very image-with a funnyexpression on his face and his tongue hanging out. The great scientist, "theman of the twentieth century", looks at the world and all of us andlaughs.
