The Basilica of the Holy Virgin Mary was built in themonastery of Reichenau in the first half of the VIII century, during the reignof the Carolingian. Later the relics of St. Marcus were brought here.Therefore, the church got the name addition and the influx of pilgrims, boundfor Italy from different parts of the Christian Europe. The church of theVirgin Mary has the largest bell tower in the district. The three largest ofits bells were cast in the XIII century and still tickle the ears with clearand transparent sound. Part of the relics of St. Marcus is still kept in thetemple and the faithful often come here to worship the relics and enjoy thepeace and quiet, which Reichenau gives to its guests.
Lovers of medieval art will see an interesting mixture of styles in the Churchof Sts. Mary and Marcus. The constrained geometrically correct lines ofRomanesque architecture and Gothic painting and richly decorated baroquechoruses are combined here. The ancient Gospel of the IX century, carefullystored in the altar of the church, and the statue of the Madonna (XIII century)are worth attention. The church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List likeother Romanesque churches on the island. During warmer months there are manypilgrims and tourists there, so it’s better to come here in fall or winter ifyou want to fully enjoy the beauty of this church.
