The walls of St. George's Church on the island ofReichenau are covered with unique frescoes of the XI century. The greatChristian relic - the head of St. George was also once kept here. The churchitself is a wonderful piece of early Christian art: here you can see theancient depictions of the famous biblical stories such as the resurrection ofLazarus, the healing of the leper, calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee, andmany others.
You should watch the pictures sequentially starting from the first muralon the left of the altar and moving from it in a circle. You can see an unusualmedieval caricature of female chatter, climbing the stairs next to the altar, onthe north side of the church. Idly gossiping women are surrounded by mocking devilsand the sarcastic verse is carved under the fresco: "Here I am talkingabout the insane, whose endless talk will be judged at the Last Judgment".
