The luxurious building of the Berlin cathedral replaced the modest classical church that seemed too plain to Kaiser Wilhelm II for the city of art. The project was completed by Julius Carl Raschdorff in 1894-1905. For Protestant Germany, architectural solution of baroque and renaissance was more than bold. Meanwhile, the cathedral became the main church of the emperor’s family. Services were often attended by the members of Kaiser’s family from the Hohenzollern dynasty. Their burial vault is located in the crypt. During the air raid of 1944 the dome was severely damaged. After a prolonged restoration, the cathedral was only opened in 1993. Today you can climb the stairs to the top – you are guaranteed beautiful views on the Museum Island and the vicinity.
