Two towers of the Abdinghof church rise on the hill from where springs nourishing Pader river sprout out. It is considered that the original Benedictine abbey was established by bishop Meinwerk in 1023, however excavations show that the building was built only at the end of the 11th century.
Later a basilica with a flat roof and a three-pace vault were added to the church. A 12th century almost square Abbey Chapel is preserved in the eastern gallery with a Roman column in the center. The name of the monastery became historic because of its active educational activities. A large library was collected, and a school, a hospice, and a bindery shop were opened here. In 1867 the building was taken over by Protestants, and today it is owned by the Evangelic Lutheran church.
